2006-12-19 - domestic tranquility
Yeah. You'll notice I gave up the Superwoman trip. "I am woman! I am invincible! I can take care of two children while simultaneously preparing for Christmas, cleaning my house, and writing daily journal entries! RAAAAR I RULE!" Not so much, apparently. And that's okay. Plus I was getting too overinvested in things like the mail delivery and successful use of the Avent pump and thought perhaps a small break would be helpful so when I returned, I would have something semi-interesting to say. Again, not so much. We're still not done Christmas shopping, though the house is actually in decent shape, thanks to the dreaded party we had Saturday. Yeah, we still had it. Not so much a party, just a couple of KC's friends. Unfortunately, he invited the friends with all the damn kids. That was the annoying part; I had said, pre-baby, "well, maybe we could just invite a couple of people, we probably can't manage a big thing" and he immediately named the people I would rather not have in my house, plus their children. Luckily, the one crew is hands-down the nicest group of kids I've ever met in my life; polite, helpful, the whole nine yards. (The other set, not so much; within thirty minutes I got tired of telling them to keep it down already. It takes some doing to thump so loudly upstairs that it fucks up the picture on the TV downstairs.) It all turned out okay, as I had suspected. I made a batch of spicy chili and a batch of sissy chili (and refused point-blank to make anything special for kids who didn't like it; if Leah had to make do with what we had then so did everyone else. This probably makes me a terrible hostess, but I don't care, I'm not a fucking caterer) and rice, corn, a salad, et cetera, and even found time to make a pan of brownies. KC and Leah were tremendous help, and since Adam is still on a two to three hour schedule I had enforced rest/alone time where I went upstairs to feed him, which made me much less tense. Really, my feet didn't even hurt the next day. And, in the interest of balance, since I am always whining about KC being oblivious...I give you a list of things he has done for me lately. 1. We went grocery shopping on Sunday. Unfortunately, we pushed the schedule a bit far, meaning I had to sit down immediately upon returning home and get the baby fed. KC and Leah brought in all the groceries and put them away as well. That never happens. 2. The explanation for Monday's mild weather? KC voluntarily skipped drill to stay home and let me get some rest, as our wee tyrant decided that sleep was for sissies and stayed up from 3am until 7am. KC not only stayed home from drill, but he cooked dinner, unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher, got Leah ready for bed, and wrangled Adam when he woke up in an attempt to let me get just that little bit more sleep. That last attempt failed, but it was a noble one. 3. When said wee tyrant decided to stay awake from 9pm to 4am last night, KC woke up around two-ish and tried to help as best he could so I could at least go to the bathroom, get a drink of water, have five minutes to myself. And when I woke up this morning he'd recharged my cell phone and remembered to leave the car seat base so I wasn't necessarily trapped in the house. Mind you, after the night we put in, all I was good for was napping on the couch, but it was good to know I could have left if I wanted to. |
