2006-12-04 - of kwanzaa and ocean mammals

I did nothing today except nap on the couch and feed the baby and I feel like I have gone a hundred rounds in the ring. OW.

Wait, that's not entirely true; I had to walk to get Leah to and from school, and wrangling the stroller up and down the porch steps is probably more than I am supposed to be doing, but I think he is still just that little bit too small for a sling. It was nice to be able to do that uphill walk without stopping to catch my breath, though. Had I walked Leah to school myself last Tuesday gravity may have done the job for me.

Leah, though, is a riot. She was tickled to death because her teacher allowed her to get a book from the big kid's section (her teacher last year would not) becase it was a book all about Kwanzaa. So tonight, she was a walking, talking Kwanzaa wikipedia entry. She was asking me how to pronounce some of the words, but right before her shower she discovered something in the back of the book.

"MOMMY! This book has a glossary! Glossaries are good things, because they tell you what words are and how you say them. Did you know? Did you know? That word that you tried to help me pronounce is a word in Swahili, Mom! That is an African language! And that TOTALLY makes sense because Kwanzaa is an AFRICAN-American holiday. Do we know anyone who celebrates Kwanzaa?"

I don't know, sweetie; if they do they don't tell me.

Sigh. "Mommy. You and Daddy really have to get out more."

This from a child who tried to soothe me when KC bought the video camera. I was sprawled sort of sideways on the couch and he was testing the thing out, and I snarled at him to take the fucking thing off me because I was not having myself on camera as looking like a big fat whale. Leah sat down next to me, snuggled up, and said "Mommy, you are not a big fat whale. You are a LEETLE FEESH."

Oh, honey, thank you.

"Anyway, you are only a big fat whale right now because of Adam. When he gets here I can hug you all the way around again."

Ladies and gentlemen, my daughter, Gregory House, Jr.

But she kept an eye on her brother while I took a much needed shower, and for that I will forgive her just about anything.
